Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Varshini, and I’m a doctor with a deep passion for art. Outside of medicine, one of my greatest joys is drawing, colouring, and painting. Over the years, I’ve explored different mediums-from traditional sketching and watercolours to, more recently, digital art using Procreate. Art has always been a grounding force for me, allowing me to unwind, reflect, and express myself creatively.
When did you first become interested in this hobby and why?
My love for art began when I was in kindergarten. I still remember my older sister patiently teaching me how to colour inside the lines of a Disney colouring book-specifically showing me how to colour Ariel. That small moment sparked something in me, and I’ve been creating ever since! There’s something incredibly joyful and freeing about the act of putting colour to paper-or screen-and watching something come to life.
Do you have any role models or inspirations?
Absolutely! Growing up, I was captivated by the enchanting worlds of Disney, Studio Ghibli, and anime-style illustrations. And of course, Bob Ross-his calm presence and love for “happy little accidents” made a lasting impact. Nowadays, as a medical professional, I also find inspiration in the detailed and precise illustrations of Netter’s Anatomy, which have heavily influenced my style when I create anatomy diagrams.
How do you divide time between work and this hobby?
As someone working in a demanding field, I make it a point to carve out time for art, even if it’s just once a week or once every two weeks. It’s my way of staying centred and connected to myself amidst the busyness. Whether it’s a quick sketch or a longer painting session, those moments help me reset and recharge.
What advice do you give others looking to take up this hobby?
Don’t chase perfection. Art is as much about the process as it is about the product. Enjoy the journey, embrace the learning curve, and allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes. Every piece, even the ones that don’t turn out the way you expected, is part of your growth. And most importantly-art can be incredibly therapeutic, so just dive in and let it soothe your soul.
